Lucille Collins Davis Williams

Lucille Collins Davis Williams, affectionately known as Mrs. Davis, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2024, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the age of 93. Born on May 4, 1931, in Marion, Alabama, to Maggie Russell Collins and Fletcher Collins Sr., Lucille was a beacon of faith and love throughout her life. Lucille graduated from Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Alabama, where she balanced her studies with working on her family's farm. This early experience fostered a lifelong passion for gardening and baking. She moved to Chattanooga, where she initially worked at Walden Hospital, the first black hospital in the city, serving as a Nurse Aid. Lucille met and married Homer I. Davis. Homer was drafted into the United States Army and served in World War II. After being honorably discharged, Homer and Lucille purchased their home on Wheeler Avenue where they raised their five children. They took many family vacations and enjoyed life. Homer and Lucille were like two peas in a pod and remained that way until March 19, 1983, when he passed away. Lucille was a devout Christian and was an active member of the Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church for many years, where she served as the President of the Usher Board, mentored many people, and organized numerous church bus trips to Amusement Parks and Revivals. Later in life, Lucille met Pastor Robert Lee Williams. They married in 2010 and she joined John Mark Missionary Baptist Church, becoming a cherished First Lady. She and Pastor Williams were inseparable. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her participation in the church choir and hosting church revivals. Lucille was known in her community as "The Candy Lady," a nickname that celebrated her joy in hosting gatherings, especially during the holidays. Her home was the heart of many family celebrations, with Christmas being her favorite time of year, complete with visits from Santa Claus. Lucille dedicated much of her life to caregiving, both professionally as a home health aide and personally within her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher and Maggie Collins, Sr.; siblings, Willie, Mack Adelle, Edward, Fletcher Collins Jr. and Rosavale Collins Wright; children, Charles Davis and Karey Davis. She leaves behind a legacy of love and faith, survived by her devoted husband, Pastor Robert Williams; children, Mattie Pearl Williams, Emma Leslie, and Homer Davis, Jr. (Rosetta); and a large and loving extended family including 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Lucille will lie-in-state on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 12:30-5:00 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. The service to honor Lucille’s remarkable life will be Friday, July 19, 2024, at 12 noon in the chapel. Her final resting place will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery as a testament to her enduring spirit and the profound impact she had on those around her.
